Conference highlights

"Sala del Chiostro" - Faculty of Civil and Industrial Engineering, Sapienza University of Rome

Via Eudossiana, 18, 00184 Roma

The Faculty of Civil and Industrial Engineering is located in the area of the old convent of San Lorenzo in Panisperna, which in turn was built on the ruins of Nero's imperial palace, the Domus Aurea, today the church of San Pietro in Vincoli.

The Faculty develops around a beautiful Renaissance cloister, one of the most beautiful of the Roman Renaissance, attributed to Giuliano da Sangallo, and represents a magnificent example of Renaissance architecture in Rome.

The cloister has a rectangular portico on the ground floor with the sides of seven or eight arches supported by columns with beautiful Ionic capitals bearing the Della Rovere coats of arms. The corner solution obtained with a quadrangular pillar to which two semi-columns are leaning against is beautiful. Upstairs are windows with sober frames.

In the center of the courtyard is the beautiful curb of a well, with an elegant octagonal plan, sculpted by Simone Mosca, surmounted by a simpler trestle formed by two pairs of columns supporting a simple architrave with cymatium, attributed by some even to Michelangelo Buonarroti.

Under the floor of the courtyard there is a beautiful medieval cistern which has the dimensions of a cube of about nine meters on each side, today indicated by a thin line of stone drowned among the river stones, with a clear Lombard imprint.
