Recently, the scientific community received the sad news concerning the sudden departure of Giacomo Ceccone which occurred on 17 august 2026. Born in Varese in 1959, Giacomo graduated in Physics from the University of Pavia. His remarkable scientific journey began at the JRC-ISPRA, the European Community research institute, where he dedicated his career from 1990 until his retirement in 2024. As an expert in surface physics, much of Giacomo's research focused on the development and diagnostics of biomaterials. At ISPRA, he explored various other topics, with a particular emphasis on environmental issues. He was one of the most recognized experts in the application of surface techniques, particularly XPS and TOF-SIMS, across a wide range of materials, contributing over 200 peer-reviewed scientific publications to his credit. He is fondly remembered by many young researchers whom Giacomo inspired. Actually, throughout his career, he generously shared his expertise through training in surface characterization tools, data analysis, and sample preparation, mentoring PhD students, and postdoctoral researchers with peculiar dedication. Giacomo was deeply committed to the activities and governance of IUVSTA. He served as Chair of the Biointerfaces Division (2013-2016) and then as Vice Chair of the same Division from 2016 to 2019. During this period, he collaborated actively in the organization and scientific management of significant workshops. At a national level he contributed a lot to the growth of the Italian Vacuum Society Beyond his professional achievements, Giacomo had a passion for sailing and was a skilled swimmer; ironically, he passed away from cardiac arrest while enjoying his favorite sport with friends on his beloved Lake Maggiore. We will miss you, Giacomo. The AIV community remember you with great esteem. Your spirit and contributions will continue to inspire us all. Our thoughts are with your family during this difficult time. May the earth be gentle.
